Fledgling Press was founded in 2000 with the aim of publishing and promoting new authors.

Over the next decade, Fledgling Press published titles in various genres including fiction, biography, poetry, historical and crime fiction. Printing limited run copies, and distributing digital PDF’s, Fledgling Press continued to publish and promote new voices and debut writers.

By 2011 Fledgling Press were able to produce both printed and eBook formats of their titles in-house, forming a strategic alliance with Faber Factory, a leader in Digital Service, for the rapid distribution of their ebooks.

Their goal remains the same; to publish and promote debut authors and new voices who have never been published before. We take pride in publishing Scottish authors and writers, with first time authors from other countries taking their place in our catalogue too.

They also use local talent in the preparation of books and production – in 2011 establishing an art competition with the Edinburgh College of Art. Competition winners’ work currently adorns the covers of Viking Gold and When the Turaco Calls.

Local artists, graphic designers and illustrators are used wherever possible and we have a healthy intern programme where they don’t just have to make the tea. Viking Gold by V. Campbell.

This has helped propel two Fledgling titles into the final of The People’s Book Prize 2012: The Darkest Walk and Life Behind Bars: Confessions of a Pub Landlady, and has also resulted in Moira McPartlin’s The Incomers being shortlisted for The Saltire Society Scottish First Book of the Year 2012.

We aim to be a flexible, exciting and innovative company, with a small but talented team working hard to deliver great new authors and equally exciting debut novels. Our continued hard work and efforts ensure we remain one of Edinburgh’s leading independent publishers.

Fledgling Press are proud to be active members of Publishing Scotland, participating in several of their events throughout the year including The London Book Fair and The Edinburgh International Book Festival.
